"Map of Life : Paintings, Drawings and Poetry" an exhibition showcasing art and poetry from a 3-week workshop by one of Oceania's celebrated artists, John Pule, is currently on at the Oceania Centre for Arts & Culture, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The exhibition opening hours are from 10am to 4pm on each day.

Participating artists include Harieta Janet Vilsoni, Victoria Pau'u, Tevita Sauliga, Tomasi Domomate, Irami Buli, Josaia McNamara, Josua Toganivalu and William Bakalevu.

"His Majesty O'Keefe"

From the Fiji Museum's Facebook Page - "His Majesty O'Keefe", a film starring Burt Lancaster, was shot in Fiji, mainly around Suva, in Cumming Street, in that grand 'ole gal'- "The Grand Pacific Hotel", and off Deuba, even though it was filmed back in 1954, Deuba is still Deuba..although a little more of a pristine beach than it is now. If you want a walk down memory lane through these parts of Suva in the fifties, rent "His Majesty O'Keefe" and have a good chuckle to yourself. Loved the 'acting' from the locals.

It was actually based on an actual event that occurred in Yap Island.

The 1950 novel His Majesty O'Keefe by Lawrence Klingman and Gerald Green in fact depicts a historical figure, Captain David Dean O'Keefe (ca. 1824-1921).

Born in Ireland, O'Keefe immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Savannah, Georgia. In the 1870s he traveled to the South Pacific, where he became shipwrecked on the island of Yap.

(The film fancifully depicts his crew throwing him off his own ship during a mutiny.) Eventually O'Keefe established a lucrative trade in copra, or dried coconut flesh, on the same island.

The event promotes friendly rivalry between the staff of the resorts along the Coral Coast and to use the Sigatoka River as the main point. Over the years hotels from Suva and Nadi joined the event.

Guests of hotels are usually encouraged to participate in the activities.

Fundraising for Nadi Hospital by Style Fiji

Style Fiji 2011 is organising a fashion show on Saturday, 3 December 2011 at the Sofitel Resort & Spa, Denarau, Nadi, Fiji.

Funds raised from the event will be directed to the purchase of urgently-needed medical equipment and refurbishment of the Nadi Hospital.

Organiser, Amanda Sofield, said Nadi was the fastest growing region in Fiji and the hospital catered for a population estimated at 90,000 covering a wide area from Namaka to Bukuya.

The Nadi area also covers the outer islands with Denarau Island Marina being the main gateway to villages and island resorts in the Mamanuca Group.

She said the hospital was built with a limited budget in 2002 as a small provincial facility to cater for minimum numbers.

"It includes an accident and emergency and outpatients department, pharmacy, laboratory and radiology departments, maternity unit and children's ward, dental, in-patient care and physiotherapy service," said Mrs Sofield.

She said minimal ongoing funding for maintenance works and the necessary life-saving medical equipment meant a very real and urgent need for support in many areas.

"We have a wish list for the hospital and these include the basic necessities like bedside chairs and seating in the outpatients department, paint works and plumbing, signage, airconditioning units to regulated temperature units for drug storage in the pharmacy, portable diagnostic machines, stethoscopes the list goes on," she said.

The group launches its fundraising on Saturday, 1 October 2011.

They also hope to erect a billboard at the Denarau and Nadi turnoff.

"This billboard will have a thermometer which will have the amount of money on the sides and every time we receive donations, we will paint the thermometer," Mrs Sofield said. "We urge the business community and others to step up and assist."

Tuesday, 30 August, and Wednesday, 31 August, 9.30am to 12.30pm - Drawing Competitions with prizes given by Dr Kamal Kishor Mishra, Director for Indian Cultural Centre, Indian High Commission. Light refreshments will be provided on these days.
Thursday, 1 September, and Friday, 2 September, 9.30am to 12.30pm - Pottery-making Workshop.
