Valerie Manueli-Daveta Memorial Tournament

The Suva Hockey Association again pays tribute to Valerie Manueli–Daveta by hosting the 2011 Valerie Manueli-Daveta Memorial Tournament which will be held from Friday 10th June – Sunday 12th June, 2011 at the National Hockey Centre at the Laucala Sports City, Suva. The tournament is played annually in memory of Fiji Hockey Federation’s first National Hockey Administrator. Valerie’s dedication and commitment to hockey as a player, official and supporter was unwavering. She played an important role in the development of hockey at primary, secondary and senior levels as well as organized FHF sanctioned tournaments at all levels including internationally. Val was also instrumental in the preparation of the first Fiji Men’s Hockey Team’s participation at the 1993 Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia where the team won its first Bronze medal. It was also the first time that the Fiji Men had participated in a fully fledged tournament on turf; hockey used to be played at Veiuto on grass back then. Valerie was diagnosed with cancer in 1992 and underwent surgery in Australia and Fiji but failed to rid herself of the deadly disease. Val’s legacy lives on 18 years after her untimely death and the Suva Hockey Association is proud to honour this woman of substance. This Valerie Manueli-Daveta Memorial Tournament will be part of the Fiji Hockey National Club Championship Series. Senior teams/players entering this tournament must be affiliated to FHF before the first game. The senior men’s & women’s competition will feature 11-a-side full field games while the mixed junior competition will include cross-field 7-a-side matches with trophies and other consolation prizes on offer. The General public are welcome to attend and enjoy a weekend filled with exciting matches. Food and Drinks will also be on sale.

Badminton players are gearing up for the first ever “CITY OF SUVA CHALLENGE” which will be held at the Yat Sen Hall on Saturday 11th June 2011 beginning at 8am. Competition will be held in two categories – Open Division and B Division and will see some very strong and challenging performances especially from the National Team. Making a come back to the competition court is Norman Bentley who has been out of play due to injury. With a very powerful and quick left back-hand, Norman is out to prove and demonstrate his position in the squad is justified. This is going to be a real interesting tournament as it will give team management the opportunity to gauge and assess the performance of the National Team. The Team has been training under new coach Brent Munday for the last six weeks. Athletes have been very committed to training and have lifted their performance to another level. With the guidance of Kate Warren, the fitness trainer, players have been able to strengthen their weak areas especially with endurance and fitness. This tournament will be a tell all for those who have put in the hard work. Management will also use this tournament to identify the team pairs for competition at the Pacific Games. During training, some very interesting and encouraging doubles partnership have emerged and it will be good to see them perform at competition level.
