2009 Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open Chess Championship this weekend

The 7th Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open Chess Championships will be held on Saturday, 6 June 2009, from 8am at the Fiji Olympic House, Suva. All interested persons are invited. For further information, pls call Manoj Kumar on telephone (679) 9464193 or Krishneel Nair on (679) 9297033.

Parmeshwar, a very promising dynamic young player, was Fiji’s first representative to the Oceania Zonal Chess Championships held in 1999 at the Gold Coast in Australia. His other achievements include numerous wins on the local chess front and no doubt was on his way to a successful international career.

His untimely passing away in a tragic car accident stunned the local chess scene and the event to mark his memory is rightfully a high contested event. Sponsorship for the tournament is by two of Parmeshwar’s closest friends and family and this year they have decided to increase the prize pool to a whooping $1,000 with more hand crafted trophies up for grabs in various categories.

Defending Champion CM Manoj Kumar has confirmed participation alongside CM Calvin Prasad who also up for a revenge. The sponsor, Dinesh Prameshwar, brother of Rajnesh has also confirmed participation in this weekend chess event.
