New Year's Street Party On Again

The annual New Year's Street Party in Suva will be on again this year. The event starts in the early evening of New Year's Eve and continues into the wee hours of 1 January 2009. The party is held along Suva's Victoria Parade and at Albert Park. Those interested to attend should note that this is a non-alcoholic event.

2009 IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens

The 2009 IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens will be held from Thursday, 5 March, to Saturday, 7 March 2009 at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The IRB has also announced details of the regional qualifying tournaments that will provide the finalists for both the men’s and women’s competitions. Nine Unions will qualify directly for the men’s Tournament (the eight quarter-finalists from 2005: Fiji, New Zealand, England, Australia, France, Scotland, Argentina and South Africa and the Host Union, the Arabian Gulf). A further 15 places will be filled via qualifiers in all six regions which will kick-off in January 2008. Three qualifiers will come from Africa, two from North America, one from South America, two from Asia, five from Europe and two from Oceania. This will guarantee the presence of some teams not regularly seen on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit.

2009 IRB Wellington Sevens

The 2009 IRB Wellington 7s/Sevens Tournament will be held on Friday, 6 February, and Saturday, 7 February 2009, in Wellington, New Zealand. Matches are expected to be aired live on Fiji One Television. Airlines are to announce discounted and packaged airfares for the tournament. Fiji has been win-less so far in the two tournaments held in the 2008-2009 series at Dubai and Durban, South Africa. 2008 Stamp Your Brand on the Fest Logo Competition

The 2008 Stamp Your Brand on the Fest Logo Competition ends at midnight today, 8 December 2008. The competition organised by the Ministry of Youth is aimed at designing the logo for the 2nd Pacific Youth Festival to be held in Suva in July 2009. The theme of the Festival is : "Actioning the Youth Agenda". The competition is open to all youths between the ages of 15 and 30. The winning entry will be adopted as the official logo for the Festival and will feature on websites, t-shirts, program booklets, banners, etc. The prize for the winning designer is 3 nights accommodation at the Takalana Eco Retreat Lodge with F$200.00 spending money.

2009 Pacific Nations Cup to be played in Fiji

The Fiji Rugby Union has announced that the entire 2009 Pacific Nations (Rugby) Cup series is likely to be played in Fiji with the exception of one or two matches. The series will be held in June 2009.

UNIFEM Film Festival

The third round of the UNIFEM Film Festival will be held on Monday, 8 December 2008, starting 7pm at the Alliance Francaise, Suva. There will be two short films screened namely 'Turkey: Killing in the name of Honour' and 'Iron Ladies of Liberia'. The film 'Turkey: Killing in the Name of Honour' reveals how Turkey is cracking down on ‘custom killing’ and making life imprisonment a mandatory sentence. Killing female family members in the name of honour for perceived injury to the family’s standing is a crime emanating from centuries old traditions. This has also led to the disturbing evidence that tougher sentencing is leading to an increase in forced suicides. 'Iron Ladies of Liberia' portrays the change of Liberia from the early decades of brutal civil war to the present day. On 16 January 2006, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected to be the country’s first female president and Africa’s first freely elected female head of state. A Harvard-educated economist and grandmother of eight who had been exiled to Nigeria and nicknamed the Iron Lady, Johnson Sirleaf won a run-off election with 59 percent of the vote, but faces enormous obstacles in rebuilding a war-torn country. The Colonial Cup Rugby Series will be discontinued from 2009. The announcement was made by the Fiji Rugby Union.

2009 Canoeing/Paddling Events

The 2009 Wai Tui Fiji Outrigger International will be held from Friday, 10 April, to Monday, 13 April 2009. This will be followed by the V6 and V1 marathon season which will run from May to October 2009. The venues for these events will be advised later.

'Women on the Frontline': UNIFEM Film Festival

The second round of the UNIFEM Film Festival will be held today Monday, 1 December 2008, starting 7pm at the Alliance Francaise, Suva. There will be three short films screened tonight namely 'Mauritian: A Question of Rape', 'Colombia: Justice in the Region of Death', and 'Austria: Showing the Red Card'. The Mauritian film portrays how rape is undefined in the country's constitution and for a woman to allege that she has been raped is to run the risk of imprisonment. The Colombian film follows the life of an inspiring female judge who showed extraordinary courage in the face of violence. The Austrian film shows the courage of women to stand up against domestic violence resulting in Austria becoming a pioneer in the Protection Against Women. Admission is free. 2008 Fiji Open Table Tennis Championships

The 2008 Fiji Open Table Tennis Championships will be held over Thursday, 11 December, and Friday, 12 December 2008 for all Junior events and from Saturday, 17 January, and Sunday, 18 January 2009, for all Open events. The detailed schedule for each day is provided below :

• Thursday, 11 December 2008, 9am to 5pm, Under 11, Under 15, Under 18 Boys, Under 18 Girls, Under 15 Boys Doubles, Under 15 Girls Doubles;
• Friday, 12 December 2008, 9am to 5pm, Under 13, Under 21, Under 21 Boys Doubles, Under 21 Girls Doubles;
• Saturday, 17 January 2009, 9am to 5pm, Open Women Singles, Open Men Singles Round Robin, Mixed Doubles, Mens Doubles, Womens Doubles, B Grade Mens and Womens Singles and Doubles; and
• Saturday, 18 January 2009, 9am to 5pm, O40 and O50 Mens and Womens Singles, Oopen Womens Singles and Opens Mens Singles Knockout, Mens Doubles and Womens Doubles Semifinals and Finals, Mens and Womens B Grade Semifinals and Finals.

All events are to be held at the YMCA Hall, Suva.
