New Year Street Parties

The Street Party returns to Suva to welcome the New Year. FM96 and the Total Event Company, which has been organising the event for the last few years, comes back with its event which will again be held along Victoria Parade, in front of Albert Park. As no alcohol is permitted at the event, it is geared for enjoyment by the entire family. Beginning this year, the other radio station, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, has also joined the fun by organising its own street party at the same venue. The events start around 8pm this evening and go on until after midnight.

Christmas carol singing competition

The Morris Hedstrom City Centre (MHCC) is organising a Christmas Carol Singing Competition involving 10 groups in a one day event on Saturday, 22 December 2007. The event will be held from 6pm to 8pm at the MHCC in Suva. A panel of judges will select the best 3 choirs from the 10 choirs participating.

Road tour across Viti Levu in February 2008

I am planning a road tour across Viti Levu in early February 2008. This should be eye-opening trip to appreciate how simple things are in the rural areas and also keep us focused on the beauty of nature and God’s provision for us. Will use a four wheel drive and take camping items with me and some tea stuff for families that may invite us in for the night while on tour. The only thing that will need to be paid is the fuel for the 4wd, hire fees (which I will hire from a relative) and food. The camping materials will be borrowed (or hired?) from the army/navy folks. Telecom Inter regional calls for cheap

Telecom Fiji Limited has introduced a promotion where callers can make inter-regional calls (e.g. Suva to Labasa, or Suva to Nadi), speak for 5 minutes and get another 1 hour free talk time. That is, the caller can speak for 65 minutes for only F$1.04. Call times are :

Pacific Rugby Cup 2008 Competition

The draws for the Pacific Rugby Cup 2008 Competition has been released by the IRB. The only game that will be played in Suva is on Friday, 25 April 2008, 7pm. The game will be between Fiji Barbarians and Upolu Samoa and will be played at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva. Other games in Fiji will be played at other venues including Churchill Park, Lautoka; Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka; Prince Charles Park, Nadi; and Subrail Park, Labasa.

Police wins Sukuna Bowl

Basic Computing Skills for Primary School Students

The Continuing and Community Education Office, University of the South Pacific, is holding a "Basic Computing Skills for Primary School Students" course on 16 January 2008 at the School of Computing Computer Lab, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The course is runs from 9am to 4pm and is targeted at students in classes 6 to 8. The course introduces students to computers and teaches basic skills that enable those new to computers to use a computer for simple word processing applications. Gender Issues in Employment, Underemployment and Incomes : Book Launch

The Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics, AusAID and the School of Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics will launch the book, "Gender Issues in Employment, Underemployment and Incomes" written by Dr Wadan Narsey on Tuesday, 11 December 2007 at the AusAID Lecture Theatre, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The program runs from 5.30pm to 7pm. The book overview and key findings will cover:

• Who works more in paid work - females or males?
• How much additional time is required for household work compared to paid work? Another 20%? 60%? 80%? 100%?
• Who works more in "total work" including household work?
• Are women getting "equal pay for equal work"?

Beach Soccer

The 2nd Beach Soccer Club/Business House Championship (Fiji wide) will be held on Saturday, 15 December, and Saturday, 16 December 2007 at the Beach Volleyball Courts, National Sporting Complex, Laucala Bay, Suva. The championship will be used to select a national team to play in the Oceania qualifying rounds in February 2008. Christmas Shopping

Most shops in Suva are already on their Christmas sale. Whilst turnout has not been very good (just judging from foot traffic going in and out of shops), it is expected that shopping activities will rise over the next two weeks before Christmas, after workers receive their bonuses or back pays. It would also be good if the Suva City Council organised a fun and trade fair at this time of the year which can be a major highlight of the Suva social calendar. Let's hope that the city fathers would take up this suggestion.

Cyclone changes course

Tropical Cyclone, Daman, changed course over yesterday and is likely to hit Yasawa and North West Viti Levu. Residents have been asked to prepare for the cyclone by putting up their hurricane shutters and have food, water, radio, battery and other supplies ready. Cyclone moves away from Fiji

A tropical cyclone, Daman, has moved away from Fiji last night. The cyclone had developed in the east of Rotuma earlier. Last night, the Weather Office at Nadi has advised that it has moved away from the country, however, heavy rains will be experienced over the next few days.

Art Exhibition by USP students

An Art Exhibition to feature works by students of DG423, ED281 and ED182 will be on from Wednesday, 5 December, to Friday, 7 December 2007, at the Oceania Centre for Arts & Culture, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The opening at 5pm, Wednesday, 5 December, will be followed by some refreshments. The exhibition will run from 9am to 6pm on Thursday, 6 December, and Friday, 7 December. No entry fees required.

MYOB Seminar and Workshop

A MYOB Seminar and Workshop will be held on Friday, 7 December 2007, at JJ's on the Park, Suva. The program is as follows :

• 9am to 1pm, Seminar;
• 2pm to 4.30pm, MYOB Workshop;
• 4.30pm o 6.30pm, Cocktail.

The workshop will be run by Ms Lynley Averis of MYOB, NZ. Keynote speakers will include officials from the Ministry of Labour, Fiji National Provident Fund, Capital Markets Development Authority and Oceanic Communications.

Ba wins IDC in extra time

Ba won the Inter District (Soccer) Competition in extra time over Nadi by 2 to 1. After both teams remained scoreless at full-time, they continued playing for another 20 minutes of extra time. Suva lost out in the semi-finals. The IDC was played at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva from Thursday, 29 November, to Sunday, 2 December 2007.

Hapkido Black Belt - Special Intense Program

The Hapkido Black Belt Special Intense Program will begin in the second week of January 2008. The venue for training will be the Hyundai National Fitness Centre, National Sporting Complex, Laucala Bay, Suva. The program is open to everyone from 12 to 65 years old.
