The organisers for the Miss Fiji 2007 pageant are calling for applications from young ladies for the first ever Miss Fiji pageant. Seminar : Addressing Human Factors as the Basis of Sustainable Development

The Faculty of Islands and Oceans, University of the South Pacific, is holding a lecture on "Addressing Human Factors as the Basis of Sustainable Development in the Pacific Islands : The Mositi Vanuaso experience" on Wednesday, 24 October 2007, Marine Studies Lecture Theatre, Lower Campus, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The speaker will be Associate Professor Joeli Veitayaki, Head, School of Marine Studies. The lecture runs from 6pm to 8pm. Light refreshments to be served.

More Hobie events planned for Fiji

The captain of the Fiji team to the recent Hobie 16 Worlds events held here in Suva said that there is a need to develop young sailors in the art of sailing. Together with this plan comes the aim of holding more Hobie and sailing events in Fiji. Some of these include :

• the Fiji Nationals;
• a marathon around Viti Levu; and
• the South Pacific Championships.

Aboriginal boxers in the country for matches

A team of 10 Aboriginal boxers are in Fiji for a round of matches with local boxers. The boxers are from different parts of Australia. They will also be learning more about Fiji and its people and will be liaising with the Rotary Club to distribute books and other items to various communities. The boxers will be competing tonight, Tuesday, 23 October, and on Thursday, 25 October 2007, at the Lower Civic Auditorium against a team of young boxers from Fiji.

World Cinema: Love Stories Series

The Pacific Writers Forum and the Alliance Francaise will have a monthly screening of a series of love story films starting with one on Tuesday, 23 October 2007. The screening will be held at the N111 Lecture Theatre, SPAF Building, from 7pm. The screenings are for the purpose of exposing USP students and the general public to films from all over the world and to expose them to the diversity and richness of world cinema. No admission fee required.

Marist Old Boys Bazaar

Rucksack Club Meeting

The topic of discussion will be "The Hydrology and Glaciology of Antarctica – The Dry Valleys". Lloyd Smith had participated in the study of variations in the climate within the dry valleys of Antarctica; a small but unique area, largely snow and ice free, with free flowing rivers and large freshwater lakes. The importance of this area in climatic change monitoring is only evident in recent years, with implications of the greatest freshwater storage on the planet melting and affecting Pacific Island countries thousands of miles away. Fiji's preparations for 18th Hobie 16 World Championship

The Fiji Hobie Cat team hopes to do well at the 18th Hobie 16 World Championship which gets underway next week. More than 1,500 competitors from 28 countries will converge at the National Sailing Centre, Suva Point, for the event. The captain of the Fiji team, Grahame Southwick, said that they were hoping for a good outing. A Hobie Cat is one of several small catamarans. They offer high speeds at a relatively low cost. Bowling Pineapple Cup tournament

The Pineapple Cup National Singles Bowling tournament will be held this weekend at the Suva Bowling Club. About 60 to 70 bowlers are expected to compete for the tittle including top bowlers who represented Fiji at the recent South Pacific Games.

Fiji Golf Club Open

The Fiji Golf Club Open tournament will be held on Saturday, 6 October 2007, at the Fiji Golf Club, Vatuwaqa, Suva. Tee off at 8am.

Secondary Schools Basketball

The Sprite Light Secondary Schools Basketball semi finals and finals will be held on Saturday, 6 October 2007, at the Vodafone Arena, Laucala Bay, Suva. Games begin at 9am.

Suva celebrates Fiji's win at Rugby World Cup 2007

Suva was in celebratory mood yesterday after the Fiji team won a quarter final position at the Rugby World Cup 2007. Fiji won 38 to 34 over Wales in their pool match early yesterday morning, Fiji time. Check out part of a report below taken from the Fiji Times, Monday, 1 October 2007.

SUVA (AFP) The troubled Pacific nation of Fiji erupted in national celebration Sunday with fireworks fizzing and car horns blaring after its rugby team scored a massive upset over Wales in the World Cup.

Cup fever has gripped the rugby-mad nation, where many people stayed up all night to watch the match at 3am Fiji time Sunday. When it ended in a thrilling 38-34 victory for the South Pacific country, where the military grabbed power in a coup last December, joyous fans set off fireworks and blasted car horns around the capital Suva. "Before the game, people in the villages were flying flags outside their homes saying Go, Fiji Go', cars and taxis sported the national flag," Sports Minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi told AFP. "Everyone was getting into the spirit of it."
