Suva on Sale expected to be big

The Suva-on-Sale is expected to be bigger this year with promotions being carried out by the Suva Retailers Association. The sale, which is held once each year over a one week period, is an event that shoppers look forward to. As part of the promotion this year, the organisers are giving away a brand new car during the week. However, buyers are advised to look closely at the quality of products on sale as this has, somewhat, fallen over the years with some retailers using the sale as an opportunity to dump their goods which they have excess stock of. The consumer maxim, "buyer beware", comes to mind.

With the introduction of its new services in its new found home, Fiji, we hope that the old German lady will continue to see many more happy days on the waves. Here is Mr Westerland's message :
  • "Dear Mr. Veisamasama, I found your interesting informations about Suva on http://promotingsuva.blogspot.com/ and have a question. I am living in Germany and interested in passenger-ships. I know this ship since 1972 and used it many times between the German island Sylt and the Danish Island Romo. So I am interested in the future story of this ship and would be glad to get a picture of the ship in the new area on Fiji after its long way on the other side of the world for my picture collection. I’ m also interested in informations about the future operational area of the ship. So I ask you to give me an information, where I can get one or a few pictures of the MV Westerland in its new operational area.and further informations. In the enclosure I send you pictures of the ship, which took my father in the years 1973 in the habour of List on the island Sylt for your pleasure. I hope you enjoy them showing the ship before its getting altered in later years. You will find more pics of the MV Westerland in the internet-side : http://www.faktaomfartyg.se/westerland_1971.htm (sorry, the side is in Swedish lanuage, but the pictures are wonderful…) Greetings from Hamburg in Germany to Fiji Andreas Weidner"

Nukulau Island Photos

Nukulau Island, which is off to the east coast of Suva but still within the greater Suva reef, has had a very colourful past. It began in the late 1800s when the American representative to Fiji resided on the island. While there, his residence was burnt down by the native Fijians. Due to pressures to pay up for the damages, the Cakobau Government then sought protection from Queen Victoria by ceding Fiji to Great Britain in 1874. That began Fiji's history as a British colony which ended at Independence in 1970. In the 1970s and 1980s, Nukulau was a favourite picnic and recreational spot for Suva residents and tourists who were drawn there for its white sandy beaches and azure blue seas. This changed in the 2000s when the island was converted into an island prison to accommodate those convicted of the 2000 Fiji coup. Late December 2006, the Interim Government requested that all prisoners on the island be billeted to other prisons to free up the island again for recreational use. The latest developments regarding the island is that the Suva City Council is seeking a lease over it as part of the Council's plans to start a Suva harbour cruise with stops at Nukulau and surrounding islands. Here are some photos taken of Nukulau by Adi Nacola, a local camera enthusiast.
