Tourist attraction plans for Nukulau Island

The Suva City Council has plans to turn Nukulau Island, off Suva, into a tourist destination and introduce a ferry service between neighbouring islands and around the Suva harbour. The Council is in the process of enquiring with the Ministry of Lands regarding who has ownership of the island. The island was a famous picnic spot in the 1970s and 1980s and was converted to an island prison people implicated in the 2000 coup, including coup front man George Speight. The island prison has been decommissioned from January 2007 with the Interim Government announcing plans then of having it returned as a tourist/picnic spot.
