New Year Street Parties

The Street Party returns to Suva to welcome the New Year. FM96 and the Total Event Company, which has been organising the event for the last few years, comes back with its event which will again be held along Victoria Parade, in front of Albert Park. As no alcohol is permitted at the event, it is geared for enjoyment by the entire family. Beginning this year, the other radio station, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, has also joined the fun by organising its own street party at the same venue. The events start around 8pm this evening and go on until after midnight.

New Year's Church Services

Most churches in Suva have church services to welcome the New Year. Services start around 10pm and go up to a little after 12 midnight. If you wish to attend one of these services, pls check with a church near you. Some of the ones that you can attend include :

Christmas carol singing competition

The Morris Hedstrom City Centre (MHCC) is organising a Christmas Carol Singing Competition involving 10 groups in a one day event on Saturday, 22 December 2007. The event will be held from 6pm to 8pm at the MHCC in Suva. A panel of judges will select the best 3 choirs from the 10 choirs participating.

Road tour across Viti Levu in February 2008

I am planning a road tour across Viti Levu in early February 2008. This should be eye-opening trip to appreciate how simple things are in the rural areas and also keep us focused on the beauty of nature and God’s provision for us. Will use a four wheel drive and take camping items with me and some tea stuff for families that may invite us in for the night while on tour. The only thing that will need to be paid is the fuel for the 4wd, hire fees (which I will hire from a relative) and food. The camping materials will be borrowed (or hired?) from the army/navy folks. If you wish to join me on this trip, do let me know so that we can start planning the details, costing, etc. If you know of a friend that may be interested, send this e-mail to them. Telecom Inter regional calls for cheap

Telecom Fiji Limited has introduced a promotion where callers can make inter-regional calls (e.g. Suva to Labasa, or Suva to Nadi), speak for 5 minutes and get another 1 hour free talk time. That is, the caller can speak for 65 minutes for only F$1.04. Call times are :
  • Mondays to Fridays, between 6pm and 6am each day;
  • Weekends, from midday Saturdays to 6am Mondays.

The promotion is only available for postpay customers and will run up to 31 March 2008.

Pacific Rugby Cup 2008 Competition

The draws for the Pacific Rugby Cup 2008 Competition has been released by the IRB. The only game that will be played in Suva is on Friday, 25 April 2008, 7pm. The game will be between Fiji Barbarians and Upolu Samoa and will be played at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva. Other games in Fiji will be played at other venues including Churchill Park, Lautoka; Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka; Prince Charles Park, Nadi; and Subrail Park, Labasa.

Police wins Sukuna Bowl

The Police rugby team won the Sukuna Bowl match yesterday over the Army team 13-8. The win sees the Police team retaining the Sukuna Bowl for another year.

Basic Computing Skills for Primary School Students

The Continuing and Community Education Office, University of the South Pacific, is holding a "Basic Computing Skills for Primary School Students" course on 16 January 2008 at the School of Computing Computer Lab, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The course is runs from 9am to 4pm and is targeted at students in classes 6 to 8. The course introduces students to computers and teaches basic skills that enable those new to computers to use a computer for simple word processing applications. Gender Issues in Employment, Underemployment and Incomes : Book Launch

The Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics, AusAID and the School of Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics will launch the book, "Gender Issues in Employment, Underemployment and Incomes" written by Dr Wadan Narsey on Tuesday, 11 December 2007 at the AusAID Lecture Theatre, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The program runs from 5.30pm to 7pm. The book overview and key findings will cover:
  • Who works more in paid work - females or males?
  • How much additional time is required for household work compared to paid work? Another 20%? 60%? 80%? 100%?
  • Who works more in "total work" including household work?
  • Are women getting "equal pay for equal work"?
  • How poor are female workers compared to male workers?

Beach Soccer

The 2nd Beach Soccer Club/Business House Championship (Fiji wide) will be held on Saturday, 15 December, and Saturday, 16 December 2007 at the Beach Volleyball Courts, National Sporting Complex, Laucala Bay, Suva. The championship will be used to select a national team to play in the Oceania qualifying rounds in February 2008. Applications for entry are F$50.00 per team and should be paid by Thursday, 13 December 2007 at the Fiji Football Association Headquaters. Total prize money will be F$1,200.00.

Sukuna Bowl Challenge today

The annual Sukuna Bowl rugby challenge between the Fiji Military Force and the Fiji Police Force will be held today, Friday, 7 December 2007. Christmas Shopping

Most shops in Suva are already on their Christmas sale. Whilst turnout has not been very good (just judging from foot traffic going in and out of shops), it is expected that shopping activities will rise over the next two weeks before Christmas, after workers receive their bonuses or back pays. It would also be good if the Suva City Council organised a fun and trade fair at this time of the year which can be a major highlight of the Suva social calendar. Let's hope that the city fathers would take up this suggestion.

Cyclone changes course

Tropical Cyclone, Daman, changed course over yesterday and is likely to hit Yasawa and North West Viti Levu. Residents have been asked to prepare for the cyclone by putting up their hurricane shutters and have food, water, radio, battery and other supplies ready. High Performance Level Rugby Coaching Course

The School of Physical Education, Sport Science and Recreation, Fiji Institute of Technology, is organising a High Performance Level 1 & 2 Rugby Coaching Course in Suva from 10 to 15 December, 2007. Course content includes :

  • key factor analysis of individual, mini, sub-unit and skill;

  • risk management and ethics;

Cyclone moves away from Fiji

A tropical cyclone, Daman, has moved away from Fiji last night. The cyclone had developed in the east of Rotuma earlier. Last night, the Weather Office at Nadi has advised that it has moved away from the country, however, heavy rains will be experienced over the next few days.

Art Exhibition by USP students

An Art Exhibition to feature works by students of DG423, ED281 and ED182 will be on from Wednesday, 5 December, to Friday, 7 December 2007, at the Oceania Centre for Arts & Culture, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. Ba wins IDC in extra time

Ba won the Inter District (Soccer) Competition in extra time over Nadi by 2 to 1. After both teams remained scoreless at full-time, they continued playing for another 20 minutes of extra time. Suva lost out in the semi-finals. The IDC was played at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva from Thursday, 29 November, to Sunday, 2 December 2007.

School of Marine Studies Lecture Series

The School of Marine Studies, Faculty of Islands and Oceans, University of the South Pacific, is holding a lecture on "Can Aquaculture help to reduce the amount of coastal fishing?" on Wednesday, 28 November 2007, from 6pm to 8pm at the Marine Studies Lecture Theatre, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. The speaker will be Dr Timothy Pickering, Senior Lecturer in Aquaculture, School of Marine Studies.

New Zealand Visiting Artist

A New Zealand artist, Filipe Tohi, is visiting Fiji through the arrangements made by the Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture. Mr Tohi will give a talk on Contemporary and Traditional Arts based on his development as a creative artist, and on his most recent adaptations of sinnet lashings, lalava or magimagi into modern forms. Tohi's unique creations have attracted much international attention in Europe, USA, Asia as well as Australia. He has gigantic sculptures on permanent public display in Chanchun in China and Fujimi in Japan. The talk will be held on Tuesday, 27 November 2007, from 5.30pm at the Oceania Centre, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva.

Dana Leong Concert

The US Embassy and the Radio Fiji Gold presents a concert by Dana Leong on Friday, 23 November 2007, from 7pm at the Suva Civic Centre. Dana Leong combines hip-hop, jazz, rock, and classical sounds to create a signature hybrid sound. The Asian-American artist uses the cello and trombone. No entry fee required.

The Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Competition, also referred to as the FMF Chow Games, will be held on Friday, 16 November, and Saturday, 17 November 2007 at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva. Most participants from schools around Fiji are already in Suva and billeted in various venues around the capital. The games is the highlight of the primary school athletics calendar, much like the Coca Cola Games being the highlight of the Fiji Secondary Schools athletics agenda.

The annual Sukuna Bowl Competition between the Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Forces will be held on 7 December 2007 at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva. Army and police players are going through their inter-force eliminations to select their teams for the Competition. This is a prominent event on the social calendar for our disciplinary forces.

Carpenters/Morris Hedstrom's Building to be ready by Christmas

The Carpenters/Morris Hedstrom's Building in central Suva, built on the site of the old Morris Hedstrom's which was razed by fire in 1998, will be ready by Christmas 2007. The first and second floors of the complex will be ready by the first week of December. The complex will be a full department store shopping mall with a supermarket on the ground floor as well as a food court, bakery, liquor store, pharmacy, butcher and with speciality shops offering clothing, banking and jewellery. Level 2 will have a the Morris Hedstrom's Homemaker Division while Level 3 will have a high-end food court and a car park. The second part of this project will see the construction of a high rise structure that will be the tallest building in Fiji. Carpenters' Suva foreshore development also continues and will include a hotel, condominiums and an entertainment centre.

The Fiji Netball team is preparing for the World Championships which will be held at Auckland, New Zealand from Saturday, 10 November 2007. Fiji is allocated to Pool C together with Jamaica, Cook Islands and Singapore. The team comprises :

Melbourne Cup Races

The Melbourne Cup Horse Races will be held today, Tuesday, 6 November 2007, Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. This is a big society event in Suva with most hotels and clubs organising a hat competition for the ladies and sweepstakes for all. Each of these places will have something organised today :

World Cinema - The Cloud-Capped Star

The Cloud-Capped Star will screen on Wednesday, 7 November 2007, from 7.00pm at the U8 Lecture Theatre, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. This is part of the Pacific Writers Forum and the Alliance Française de Suva programme of monthly film screenings. The Cloud-Capped Star, is a film directed by Ritwik Gattak of India. It is set in the late fifties at Calcutta and is about a refugee family and the struggle of Nita, the oldest daughter, to keep them afloat and together. No admission fee required.

Diwali - The Festival of Lights

It is the week of Diwali. Most shops in the city would be offering items on sale to celebrate Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights where good conquers evil. The festival will be celebrated on Friday, 9 November 2007. Expect the homes of members of our Indian community all lit up during the night as they celebrate another year of the festival. Given that there is a ban on heavy firecrackers, one would expect more ingenious displays of lights this time. Miss Fiji 2007

The organisers for the Miss Fiji 2007 pageant are calling for applications from young ladies for the first ever Miss Fiji pageant. The winner will represent Fiji to other pageants including the Miss South Pacific, Miss Asia/Pacific and Miss World. To qualify, applicants must fulfill the following requirements :
  • be between 18 and 26 years of age by 22 December 2007;
  • be single and never been married;
  • have a clean police record.

Seminar : Addressing Human Factors as the Basis of Sustainable Development

The Faculty of Islands and Oceans, University of the South Pacific, is holding a lecture on "Addressing Human Factors as the Basis of Sustainable Development in the Pacific Islands : The Mositi Vanuaso experience" on Wednesday, 24 October 2007, Marine Studies Lecture Theatre, Lower Campus, University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay, Suva. More Hobie events planned for Fiji

The captain of the Fiji team to the recent Hobie 16 Worlds events held here in Suva said that there is a need to develop young sailors in the art of sailing. Together with this plan comes the aim of holding more Hobie and sailing events in Fiji. Some of these include :
  • the Fiji Nationals;
  • a marathon around Viti Levu; and
  • the South Pacific Championships.

Aboriginal boxers in the country for matches

A team of 10 Aboriginal boxers are in Fiji for a round of matches with local boxers. The boxers are from different parts of Australia. They will also be learning more about Fiji and its people and will be liaising with the Rotary Club to distribute books and other items to various communities. The boxers will be competing tonight, Tuesday, 23 October, and on Thursday, 25 October 2007, at the Lower Civic Auditorium against a team of young boxers from Fiji.

World Cinema: Love Stories Series

The Pacific Writers Forum and the Alliance Francaise will have a monthly screening of a series of love story films starting with one on Tuesday, 23 October 2007. The screening will be held at the N111 Lecture Theatre, SPAF Building, from 7pm. The screenings are for the purpose of exposing USP students and the general public to films from all over the world and to expose them to the diversity and richness of world cinema. Marist Old Boys Bazaar

State Celebrations for the FMF Flying Fijians

The Fiji Government has organised a State Celebration for the FMF Flying Fijians team to the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The event is being held on Saturday, 13 October 2007, at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva. The detailed program for the day is provided below :

Diwali Event

A Diwali event is being organised on Saturday, 3 November 2007, from 6.30pm at the Kshatriya Hall, Des Voeux Road, Suva. The event will include a cultural component followed by a ten-course vegetarian dinner. There will be Diwali songs, dances and talks depicting the significance of Diwali festival for the cultural component of the event. Rucksack Club Meeting

There will be a meeting of the Rucksack Club on Wednesday, 10 October 2007, from 6.45pm, at the St Andrews Church hall, corner of Gordon and Goodenough Street, Suva. The topic of discussion will be "The Hydrology and Glaciology of Antarctica – The Dry Valleys". Lloyd Smith had participated in the study of variations in the climate within the dry valleys of Antarctica; a small but unique area, largely snow and ice free, with free flowing rivers and large freshwater lakes. The importance of this area in climatic change monitoring is only evident in recent years, with implications of the greatest freshwater storage on the planet melting and affecting Pacific Island countries thousands of miles away. The Fiji vs South Africa quarter final match at the Rugby World Cup 2007 will be replayed on Fiji TV from 1pm today, Monday, 8 October 2007. Fiji's preparations for 18th Hobie 16 World Championship

The Fiji Hobie Cat team hopes to do well at the 18th Hobie 16 World Championship which gets underway next week. More than 1,500 competitors from 28 countries will converge at the National Sailing Centre, Suva Point, for the event. The captain of the Fiji team, Grahame Southwick, said that they were hoping for a good outing. A Hobie Cat is one of several small catamarans. They offer high speeds at a relatively low cost.
