Nukulau Island back as a picnic spot
Nukulau Island will be enjoyed again by Suva residents and visitors when it stops being used as a correction facility to accommodate George Speight and other men that were implicated in the 2000 coup. Nukulau Island is right across the waters from Laucala Bay and is one of the few places with white sandy beach near Suva. In past years, before it became an island prison, Suva residents would use the place for their parties and picnics after payment of a small fee to the authorities. Now that it has been given back as a picnic spot, it should be a more exciting place to go to given its most history as an island prison.
