Bishop Foley Rugby Tournament back after 2 decades

The Bishop Foley Rugby Tournament comes back this year after 2 decades. The tournament organised by Catholics in Fiji will be played on 1 and 2 December 2006 at the Suva Grammar School grounds. The tournament was first organised primarily to foster a spirit of friendship among Catholics in Fiji and Rotuma. It is named after a bishop who once headed the Catholic Church in Fiji and is buried in a tomb on a small headland by the sea at St John's College in Cawaci, Ovalau. It was a character of the bishop that Catholics in parishes around the country meet and renew friendships. The rules have since been relaxed to include some Methodists in a team, signed by the parish priest. Some of our national representatives have played at one of the tournaments including Jo Rauto, Waisale Serevi, Asaeli Hughes, Iokimi Finau, Paulo Nawalu and Belasio Vukiwai. Teams already confirmed for the tournament this year include : Levuka, Natovi, Nausori, Naililili, Vanuakula, Nadera, Samabula, Raiwaqa, Laucala, Suva, Lami, Tamavua, Lomary, Namosi and Veivatuloa. The pools have been decided as follows :
  • Pool 1 : Suva, Namosi, Natovi, Raiwaqa;
  • Pool 2 : Laucala, Veivatuloa, Samabula, Nadera;
  • Pool 3 : Lami, Tamavua, Nausori, Naililili;
  • Pool 4 : Vanuakula, Lomary, Pacific Regional Seminary, Levuka.

Netball will also feature for the first time at this year's tournament.
