Torres Strait Islanders dance at festival
Deep Sea dancers from the Torres Strait islands put on a display at the 3rd Melanesian Arts & Cultural Festival currently being held in Suva, Fiji. The 15-member delegation is the smallest team to be represented at the festival but that did not deter them from performing their best at the event. The group comes from the eastern side of the Torres Straits, an island known as Murray Island. However, they have all moved to Thursday Island, which is the centre of administration for Torres Straits. The delegation leader said what caught their attention during the festival was the friendliness of the people of Fiji. She said that everyone seemed just willing to help and that they were blessed to be here and be part of the Melanesian family. The festival continues on Monday, 9 October 2006 and will run until Wednesday, 11 October 2006, before a closing ceremony at the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva, at 7pm that day. Check out the stalls and buy yourself some souvenir from the Melanesian Islands if you are or intend to come to Suva. The detailed program for the festival is on an entry on 4 October 2006 on this blog. Note from GV : Visitors to Suva can book our two bedroom rental home with seaviews.
