Melanesian Arts & Cultural Festival to showcase art, craft

The 3rd Melanesian Arts & Cultural Festival will be the culmination of months of preparation for the five Melanesian countries participating. The festival is being hosted by the Government of Fiji and will open on 3 October 2006. Participating countries will start arriving by 26 September 2006 with Vanuatu being the first to arrive. An organising committee statement said that Fiji's preparation rekindled a lot of communal joy in finding out their rich heritage with all the 14 provinces taking part. Each province has a meke group, featuring 70 performers and will also bring in their respective artisans in the areas of pottery making, weaving, carving and traditional medicine. The venue for the week-long festival includes the Post Fiji Stadium, Laucala Bay, Suva, for the opening and closing ceremonies; Ratu Sukuna Park for carving, weaving, lunch hour shows; FDB Foreshore in front of the Suva Civic Centre for five country bures from the five participating countries which will also be the retail outlet for fine art and craft; Holiday Inn for symposiums; Lower Civic Centre for visual art and craft exhibitions and the Fiji Museum grounds for the Valenikuro displays of traditional food preparations and sale.
