Rotuma gives F$333,000

Rotuma islanders yesterday opened the annual Methodist Church Conference at Ratu Cakobau Park with F$333,000.00. The contribution was handed to Methodist Church president, Reverend Laisiasa Ratabacaca at a traditional ceremony. Apart from the money, people of Rotuma also presented traditional gifts and food. Rotumans living in Suva and those who came from the island were part of the colourful opening ceremony. At the start of the choral and soli competition yesterday, the church had collected F$13,000.00 from the primary school choral competition with the secondary schools, tertiary institutions and business house competitions still to be held. The church needs about F$3 million every year to carry out its activities and help run its primary, high and vocational schools, theological college and orphanage. The church said it had been raising money through tithes and individual levies throughout the year and fundraising at the conference was only part of the church's plans to raise money. The church had just increased its individual levy from F$10.00 to F$15.00 and cited an increase in cost of living as the reason. Dilkusha Girls Primary School won the primary schools choral competition while Marcellin Primary School was runner up. The secondary schools choral competition began last night.
