The Melanesian Arts & Cultural Festival : What's Coming?

Fiji will host the 3rd Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival with all exhibitions free to the public. With the theme 'Living Cultures, Living Traditions', the festival will be held in Suva from Monday, 2 October to Wednesday 11 October. The entire Suva foreshore beginning at Sukuna Park stretching across to the Fiji Museum will feature static art displays, film and music shows, indigenous art and craft exhibition and even the showcase of traditional cooking methods. There will be shows running at Sukuna park during lunch hour to cater also to the working people in the Central Business District. The opening and closing shows are to be held at the Post Fiji Stadium and Albert Park, respectively. Participating countries include Fiji, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. Government is offering companies a 150% tax rebate if they sponsor the 10-day show. The festival was held in 1998 at the Solomon Islands and at Vanuatu in 2002. The Fiji Department of Culture & Heritage said the show is 'an opportunity for indigenous expressive arts to be identified as part of nation building especially the potential it offers as an alternative source of income, generation and employment. The festival offers a unique opportunity for the promotion and marketing of indigenous culture. It is also an opportunity for artists to showcase their talents and creativity.' The festival will provide a range of cultural performances and artistic expressions with activities ranging from contemporary performing arts demonstrations, arts exhibitions and sales, fashion shows, canoe race, symposiums, forums and tours to schools and villages.
