The impact of the new Rewa Bridge and other upcoming developments
The new Rewa Bridge which was opened yesterday is to boost business in the town of Nausori and the three provinces of Rewa, Naitasiri and Tailevu which all converge there. The mayor of Nausori said the town's vision was to revitalise Nausori into one of Fiji's most vibrant and dynamic business centres. The Rewa River is in itself a huge potential future development with business and sightseeing activities along the River. An extension of the town's boundaries would bring about more growth with the setting of new businesses, shops, homes, services and open spaces for sports and entertainment. Retailers expect a boost in trade with more traffic to come to the town. Housing developments are expected to come up in the area with the Housing Authority saying that there is a waiting list for those that wish to have homes in the area. Agricultural produce in the three provinces are expected to be more accessible to markets with the bridge completed. In another development, extension work on the Nausori Airport's runway will start in December 2006 to allow bigger aircraft to land there. This will be complemented by the construction of a new terminal at the airport work on which will begin next May. The extension will see the runway extended to about 345 metres to allow landing of aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800. To improve land transport efficiency, Government is also planning to have a road from Koronivia, near Nausori towards Suva, running along the coast and appearing at the Bailey Bridge at Nabua. Another four-lane road was also planned from Koronivia to Tamavua. These are in addition to projects going on which include widening the Ratu Dovi Road and the Laqere Bridge at Nasinu.
