Hobie 16 championships at Pacific Harbour this month
The Air Pacific sponsored Hobie 16 South Pacific Championships, are to be held at Pacific Harbour, from 18 to 23 August 2006. The annual event is being hosted by Fiji for the second consecutive year, by popular demand. Fiji is the number one preferred destination for those wishing to race in winter. This year's event is attracting competitors from Australia, NZ, the USA, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India and Korea. It will include current and past world champions and competition is expected to be fierce. A strong Fiji contingent will also compete. The Fiji Hobie Cat Association has begun a drive to recruit younger sailors into the sport. Fiji Hobie Cat racers have done well over the years with the likes of Shayne Brodie and John Philp finishing 15th in the World Open series and winning heats in the finals as well as Grahame Southwick, finishing 4th in this year's Asia Pacific Championships in Hong Kong, third in the Thailand Nationals, one place behind the current World Grand Master Champion and fourth in the last World Grand Master Championships.
