World Music Festival to be held in Suva this Saturday
Boney M, Te Vaka, Aiysha and local group Black Rose are heading the line up of music groups performing at the first ever World Music Festival Fiji to be held on Saturday, 10 June, in Suva. The festival offers a vast array of musical genres : reggae, rock, foots, folk, dub, Indian and South Pacific styles as well as traditional South Pacific dance and music. The people behind the festival are Australians Andrew Grenenger and Mark Bruno, and Dirk Klein from Germany. The upcoming event is not the first big festival organised by the group. Two years ago they staged a festival in the remote Indian town of Leh in Kashmir. The two day event was created to "re-open Kashmir for tourism" and was attended by 20,000 spectators. So what has brought the group to Fiji? Mark Bruno said "We had good experiences on earlier visits to Fiji. It seemed to us that the people of Fiji appreciated music events of this kind; the UB40 concert in March proved that again. We found a lot of parties interested to support the festival like the Fiji Visitors Bureau, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation and the Ministry of Youth ...." The idea is to make the festival an annual event in future. As well as a full day of great music, the festival boasts good and beverage stalls, a beer hall and rides for kids. Paintings, carvings and sculptures will be on display in a show designed to promote local arts industries. The line up so far include : Boney M; Te Vaka; Aiysha; Blue King Brown; Black Rose; The Nail Factory; Laisa Vulakoro; Kulture; Tom Mawi & Friends; Shobna Chanel; FTA Choir; Oceanic Dance Group; 4 Jams; and DJ Notorious. The event will be held on Saturday, 10 June, at the Post Fiji Stadium. Tickets are selling at F$25.00 if bought in advance, or F$27.00 at the gates. Grandstand tickets are F$35.00.
