Remove derelict ships, owners told
Owners of derelict ships in harbours around the country could have their licences revoked if they do not remove their ships, says the Transport Ministry. The comment was made by the Transport Minister, Tomasi Vuetilovoni, after an increasingly popular lobby for a clean capital city. Usually the owners of the boats are overseas. Abandoned and derelict ships are those that had run aground on reefs and the rusty ones that had been impounded. A non-governmental organisation was formed to lobby for the removal of these boats from Suva Harbour because the boats were becoming an eyesore and an environmental hazard.
