Inaugural Fiji Film Awards set for Suva in July

The Fiji Audio Visual Commission announced last week Telecom Fiji's exclusive sponsorship of the TFL Kula Film Awards. The film awards theme is "Finding Fiji's Future Film-makers". TFL said the theme indicated that there were talents in our communities waiting to be discovered and the search for these talents was a journey that it was proud to be part of. The TFL Kula Film Awards is created to raise awareness of the audio visual industry in Fiji and also realise the untapped potential of future film-makers and movie talents in Fiji. The Fiji Audio Visual Commission has approached various schools in Fiji to make a short film of any topic that interests them. The films will then be judged by both a panel of judges and by the public. Representatives of the local audio visual industry will be on-hand to provide technical assistance such as film editing. The Commission has so far received applications from 12 schools for the awards and 15 for the Bollywood dance competition awards running concurrently with the film competition. Prizes for grabs include those for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Most Popular Film. The movies will be screened on Fiji TV for public viewing and voting and will be hosted on-line on the Connect website, http://www.connect.com.fj/, where the public can log on at anytime and vote for their Most Popular Film. The Commission has planned an open day for 28 and 29 July to complement and launch the inaugural gala awards night on 29 July.
